With the votes counted and the election results now in, MFAN is looking toward the next administration and Congress for opportunities to enhance U.S. development cooperation in 2017 and beyond. Recently, MFAN called for the continuation of strong, bipartisan support for robust and effective foreign assistance and outlined practical recommendations for how the next president and Congress can further strengthen U.S. development policy and practice.
Our recommendations focus on 5 key areas that are either already seeing progress or are ripe for reform:
– Elevating development as a national priority
– Increasing aid effectiveness through country ownership and accountability
– Reforming humanitarian assistance, including food aid
– Moving into new forms of partnership beyond aid
– Enhancing development finance and enabling private sector investment
Over the coming weeks, we will be releasing a series of blogs making the case for why President-elect Trump and the 115th Congress should prioritize these five issues when they take office.
